project details:
|
The rural district of Hjartdal-Svartdal
in the inland part of Telemark county in southem Norway, was
given priority in a national inventory of valuable rural landscapes
1992-1994.
In this mountain area the interactions between the natural environment
and sustained human use over a long period have created a landscape
with high biodiversity at both the landscape, biotope and species
levels. It also contains a variety of cultural monuments, including
several medieval wooden buildings. The relationship between
cultural monuments and their surroundings can still be distinguished,
and the landscape structure makes it possible to trace the history
of the use of the countryside and how people have lived.
The area is therefore of high conservation value and in addition
of great value for educational and research purposes. The area
also has aesthetic values and considerable potential in terms
of tourism and outdoor recreation. |

Benefits
 |
|
ecological benefits:
|
The species-rich old grasslands and
old pollarded trees, as well as road verges etc. are maintained
(i.e. the management has the necessary "holistic"
approach). |
|
socio-economic benefits:
|
The cultural landscape values are
utilised for rural development in many different ways as tourism
(overnight accommodation, local food, walking tours), accommodation
and organisation of conferences, weddings etc., labelled high
quality products (documenting the maintenance of cultural landscape
values by the production), and a mowing festival. In addition
voluntary work and joint important areas strengthen the local
identity and create new social networks and commitment. |
|
other benefits:
|
Since the management of the cultural
landscape has a holistic approach also cultural monuments as
medieval and other old buildings, the landscape history, traditions
etc. are maintained by this project |
